Jack of Fables

If you think you don’t know Jack—you’d be wrong. Jack Horner, from “Jack and the Beanstalk” and other fairy tales, has often appeared in the award-winning Fables comic book and has now been evicted from the Fables’ community.

With Willingham writing, it’s to be hoped that the Fables magic will continue. But the question remains as to how well a secondary character from an ensemble series can fare going solo. The first issue does answer one part of that question: This won’t be a book about a solitary Fable.

Abducted from the highway by a lovely young woman and her mysterious Bagmen, Jack finds himself a prisoner in a secret community where numerous other Fables are imprisoned. If they are kept there long enough, the world of the mundane readers forgets about them, and they become mundys themselves.

And, just when you think that the occasional violence is the only thing keeping this book in the “older reader” realm of Vertigo (Spoiler Warning!), there’s the closing splash page with Goldilocks as you’ve never seen her before!
