Airline pilot Brandon Cayce was deadheading (catching a free ride) with his brother Scott back to London when Scott purposefully flew the 747 into the terminal, killing almost everyone aboard. Only Brandon survived… or did he? After two weeks in a coma, he succumbed to his injuries but later revives in the morgue, leaving the nurse unconscious from shock. He makes his way to Sarah, his brother’s wife with whom he has been secretly in love. Her reaction is much the same as the nurse. In this re-imaging of the classic DC character for the Vertigo imprint, writer Bruce Jones leads the reader through a complicated network of timelines and lifetimes. There is a considerable amount scene shifting composed of either memories or dreams serving to reveal in the brothers’ backstory and their dysfunctional relationship with their father. But can these vignettes be believed? How much of Brandon’s afterlife experience is wish fulfillment? Hopefully, Brandon will find the answers in death that eluded him in life.
