This volume reprints the Poison Elves: Hyena four-issue limited series, and adds two other short story elements by creator Drew Hayes that help flesh out the background of the sassy, belligerent elf witch named Hyena. One is a long poem modeled on the iconic Poe poem “The Raven.” Called “The Crow,” it has something to do with the relationship between Luciphur and his ex-wife Hyena. Also included is 1998’s “Hell Hath No Fury” wherein readers witness the bitter, fiery dissolution of Hyena’s romantic entanglement with the hot-headed elf named Tenth. Part elf-oriented fantasy and part post-feminist anti-heroine, Hyena makes for a curiously compelling genre hybrid.
