Blue Hole

The recipient of a 1996 Xeric Foundation grant to complete her comic book, creator Christine Shields presents an anthology of gothic tinged and otherwise surreal “adventures and mishaps.” One such tale is of a man who shaved off all his hair and went to swim in the Santa Cruz aquarium with the dolphins. In other stories, Shields relates the bizarre escapades of characters like the Pancake Man, a girl who sticks a bean up her nose only to have it sprout, and a man who builds a house out of matches so he can set the finished edifice on fire. Shields places all of her characters in an otherworldly dreamlike state that recalls classic children’s literature and the occasional horror story. Through all of these inexplicable episodes, Shields’ dark, sexually charged sensibilities and Edward Gorey inspired artwork create an oppressive, unsettling mood that keeps the reader on edge.
