Dracula: Vlad the Impaler
(Topps, 1993)
Topps
Dracula is one of the most horrifying and enduring figures in all of fiction. Created by novelist Bram Stoker, his legend has been expanded in countless books and films (and yes, comics as well).
But there was also a real Dracula, a prince of Wallachia and son of Vlad Dracul (“The Dragon”). His father was a tyrant, ambitiously seeking to wrest power from the struggle of East against West in the time of the Crusades. When his father was killed, Vlad Dracul the Younger (“Vlad Dracula”) proved even more merciless. When he assumed power in Wallachia, he sought out the traitorous boyars who led to his parents’ death. On Easter Sunday, he invited them to his palace for a feast, then had his guards arrest them. They marched the boyars for days, then forced them to build castle Dracula. The weak who could not make the journey were impaled on stakes, giving him the name Vlad the Impaler. And the terror had only begun!
