Creators Manny Trembley and Eric A. Anderson set out to prove that hard-boiled detective novels and the samurai genre go together like dames and guns in this tale of crime and passion that takes place in an unspecified Japanese setting. Like Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, and other gumshoes, Sam Noir provides the snappy narration full of vivid imagery as he becomes obsessed with the requisite femme fatale. The black and white artwork takes advantage of the contrast between lights and shadows to make swords, throwing stars, kimonos, and sushi fit into the noir world.
