One Eye

Drawn and Quarterly is famous for producing books of experimental and cutting-edge modern art, and they don’t disappoint with Charles Burns’s collection of photographs. Every page presents two different, usually unrelated, photographs juxtaposed against each other and then teamed with clever, sometimes enigmatic titles. Burns achieves the effect of confusing readers and forcing them to pause and ponder each scene, creating a slow, methodic read not unlike wandering through an art gallery. Many of the photographs seem to be slice-of-life pictures taken by the artist in just a handful of cities, giving readers an almost voyeuristic view of Burns and how he sees the world.
