Shi: Kaidan

    (Crusade, 1996)
™ and ©1996 William Elliott Tucci

“Kaidan” means “weird stories” or “ghost stories.” This 1996 Halloween special is a collection of such weird stories, once again brilliantly pulling off the trick of telling beautiful, entertaining stories which help fill out the characterization of Ana Ishikawa (Shi).

The stories in this special were all written by Peter Guttierez, with art by Mike Kaluta, Val Mayerik, Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), David Mack (Kabuki), and Jason Orfalas. The story begins with Sakai’s “The Soul of the Sword!” about a proud swordmaker and his desperate deal with the devil in order to fulfill an imperial commission. Another standout is Mayerik’s “The Second,” about two friends who travel different paths of honor and betrayal—although both end in death.
