Thor: The Eternals Saga

™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.

Sporting an excellent redone Simonson cover, this trade paperback collects Thor #283-291 and Thor Annual #7, Roy Thomas’ seamless implementation of Jack Kirby’s Eternals into the mainstream Marvel universe. Originally, they were supposed to exist outside the mainstream Marvel universe.

Thomas did an excellent job, stating that Thor had encountered The Eternals thousands of years ago but had had his memories erased. Regaining the memories, Thor confronts The Eternals in the present, allying himself with Ikaris and Sersi, his future fellow Avengers. He also battles The Forgotten One, another future fellow Avenger. Thor’s father, Odin, is also keeping a secret from Thor regarding The Celestials.

This epic story is not light reading — nor is it finished; the second volume will be out in several months. This is a classic Thor story: epic, with the fate of humanity at stake.

The art by Buscema and Pollard is outstanding. We’re also treated to Simonson’s early Thor art. Consider it a sneak-peek of the outstanding run he had on Thor from #337-382 — something still discussed reverently to this day.
