The courting traditions of 19th Century England could be complex for people in love. The goal for a man was to marry in his own class or above. Women were sometimes reduced to bargaining chips or breeding mares. To marry for love was virtually unthinkable. William Jones is an upper class Englishman from a merchant family. When William falls in love with Emma, a beautiful maid, it stuns all of proper society. William’s father forbids the union. His fiancée’s father takes direct steps to stop it. Even his brothers and sisters detest the thought of a poor commoner joining their family. And what of shy, penniless Emma? Raised an orphan with nothing but her spectacles and a beautiful face, all she wants is to be loved by William. Will the star-crossed lovers actually have a happy ending with an entire country against them?

Meticulously researched, skillfully drawn and full of engaging characters, Emma is an absolute delight.
