Smoke & Mirror (1st Series)

    (Speakeasy, 2005)
™ and ©2005 Charles William Satterlee

William Saterlee’s second project with Speakeasy Comics (see also Of Bitter Souls) revives a fictitious Golden Age super-duo named Mr. Smoke and Miss Mirror in modern day Chicago.

As the story goes, Mr. Smoke, a black-clad figure with various super-powers involving darkness, smoke, and stealth fought bad guys in the 1950s alongside his counterpoint, Miss Mirror, a beautiful blond in shiny whites who had the power to harness light energy and channel it against her foes.

Smoke retired after the Miss Mirror died. Flash forward to the present, and the retired Mr. Smoke has begun mentoring today’s Smoke, a lawyer at a low-cost legal clinic. (The modern day Mirror will debut in books not yet published at the time of this writing.)

Complete with retro-fabulous flashbacks to the Golden Age—colored with Benday dots—Smoke & Mirror represents a light-hearted retro-pastiche that plays with the kitschy charm of Golden Age super-hero serials.
