Back when Marvel’s Ultimate books premiered, one of the goals of the line was to introduce kids to the joy of reading comics by providing accessible, updated variations of Marvel characters. X-Men was chosen as the second Ultimate title due to the characters’ popularity and the success of Bryan Singer’s movie. Ultimate X-Men debuted to great success and turned writer Mark Millar into a superstar. And over the ensuing years, Marvel tried various ways to get its stories into kids’ hands. Browse the toy aisles of a Target store and a shopper might find this book which reprints most of the story from Ultimate X-Men 1-6 in slightly bigger dimensions. Although light on character moments, the action–heavy edit of the first Ultimate X-Men story arc might entice the casual fan and maybe turn them onto the full, uncensored version.
