Mixtionary
(IDW, 2006)
™ and © Idea + Design Works
This dictionary of “mixed-up modern words for the mixed-up modern world” is disappointing, neither as clever nor as cutting-edge as one might hope.
Much of it deals with relationships and, despite the fact that three of the four creators are male, the tone skews heavily to the female point of view. Moreover, many of the terms don’t require mixing. A working weekend is a “workend”? All right. But we could have cobbled together that “ex” plus “pose” equals “ex-pose.”
The art is fun. Cartoony characters with tiny bodies and giant heads demonstrate the entries, although the pictures rarely add anything to the definition that’s not already in the text.
The average CBG reader may chuckle knowingly at a few entries, such as “mantiques” (a man’s prized possession, which his wife would gladly trash — the illustration shows comics and action figures) or “bidiot” (if you regularly buy comics via online auctions, you may be one), but there’s way too much about shoes in here. Readers of Shoe Buyer’s Guide might better appreciate “shoeoff,” “shoepede,” “shoepreme,” etc.
–Jack Abramowitz
