Civil War: Choosing Sides

    (Marvel, 2006)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.

Civil War has reinvigorated the Marvel universe. It’s placed the entire cast in a new light. Even stories with side characters such as USAgent and Antman are interesting. Howard the Duck has a cameo, and Iron Fist’s attempt to take over Matt Murdock’s Daredevil persona was attention-catching.

This issue provides glimpses into what’s happening in the Marvel universe. It’s still pretty convoluted, and you probably have to be a real Marvel fan to follow it all. But the storyline with super-hero registration mirrors the current climate of repressed civil liberties. The frightening aspect is that some heroes not only accept the limited freedom, but fight for it.

This crossover works because it’s simple. You pick a side. Done. Villains and heroes are now completely mixed up. With the time and effort Marvel is putting into this crossover, there will be lasting effects for issues to come. The problem with all such previous arcs is that the result of the crossover usually means a return to the status quo. Woe be it to Marvel, if it ignores this change.
