Colors in Black

    (Dark Horse, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Scott Tolson

This four-issue anthology mini-series, part of Spike Lee’s “Comics from Spike” line, explores the issue of race in America, and makes clear that the “issue” is actually many issues, separate but intertwined.

In the first issue, “The Introduction an’ S*** or The Bad Rap Song” takes a semi-humorous look at black stereotypes and those who perpetuate them. “The Life That Jack Built” tells of a hard-working black man whose struggle for acceptance in mainstream America has blinded him to the toll it has taken. “The Red Hot Pizza Girls” is a Love and Rockets-like tale of interracial attraction and the misunderstandings and strong reactions it produces. “Passion Play” contrasts a college professor’s “expert” opinion on race relations with a brutal, and much more plausible, example of the same.
