Kong the Untamed

    (DC, 1975-1976)
DC

The idea for this series began years earlier, with a character called “Anthro.” DC had created that character to test the concept of a prehistoric savage who used his intelligence to survive. After a premiere in Showcase #74, they gave him his own series, which instantly flopped.

Deciding that they were simply ahead of their time, DC reintroduced Kong in 1975. This blonde-haired Cro-Magnon had a rather unique origin, having been thrown out of his clan at birth as a threat to its leader. He was then raised by his mother, also an outcast, until he was grown. Together they were something of a mother-son team, battling man-apes and assorted dangers until his mother was eventually killed. Kong was then left on his own to survive in this savage world.
