Seeing Things
(Fantagraphics, 2005)
™ and © 2005 Jim Woodring
A lot of Fantagraphics art collections can be a bit obtuse to the unfamiliar reader (and reviewer), but Jim Woodring’s Seeing Things is clear where it stands. It stands in weird outlands, but it’s still clear. Woodring’s rich shading and colors are like some hyper-evolved Looney Tunes after 1,000 generations. Many of these figures are grotesque, even monstrous, but most seem to retain a peaceful sense of peace, like crocodiles just happy to exist, equally unexcited to sun themselves as to snap one’s face off. Set in rolling, green landscapes, they look like Salvadore Dali’s Teletubbies.
— Brendan McGinley
