Shi: East Wind Rain

    (Crusade, 1997-1998)
™ and ©1997 William Elliott Tucci

Creator William Tucci puts an Elseworlds-style treatment on the popular woman published by his Crusade Entertainment Ltd. Born Ana Ishikawa, raised Catholic, and trained in the art of killing by her grandfather, Ana became Shi—”death”—loosed upon the Yakuza.

This time out, Shi is at Pearl Harbor trying to stop the invasion that she knows will doom Japan. Conveniently, her brother and estranged father are naval officers stationed there, heightening her dilemma. Tossed into the fray are a handful of Ninjas, a second deadly warrior woman, a turncoat American spy and some Nazis. This limited series was from a story by Tucci and Gary Cohn which was scripted by Cohn.

The fight-filled first issue uses many flashbacks and shifting venues as it works to get everything in there at once. The fully painted art by Marc Sasso offers a few story-stopping pinups throughout.
