Star Wars: Dark Times

    (Dark Horse, 2006-2010)
™ and ©2006 Lucasfilm Ltd.

This series picks up right after 2005’s Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Order 66 has destroyed the Jedi Order and sent the Republic into disarray. Darth Vader has just settled into becoming the Emperor’s apprentice, survivors of the Clone Troopers betrayal try to live through the resulting chaos, and the Clone Troopers themselves wonder what will become of them in the now uncertain future. This is the beginning of what Ben Kenobi referred to in A New Hope as “the Dark Times.”

From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:

The latest title in Dark Horse’s revamping of its acclaimed Star Wars line upholds the impressive tradition recently set forth with Legacy, Rebellion, and Knights of the Old Republic. This series takes place between Episodes III (last of the new trilogy) and IV (first of the old).

Much of the galaxy is in chaos, and the ruling Empire doesn’t seem to know how to handle things, though it continues its march from star system to star system with swift and sure results. As for the newly crowned Darth Vader, he’s also getting used to his role as right-hand man, supreme intimidator, and the second-most-feared person in existence.

The best piece of character development comes from Vader, not the protagonists. It’s interesting to see an uncertain Vader not yet adjusted to the assured confidence he displays in Episode IV.

In general, Hartley and Harrison have put together a well-told tale that should please die-hard Star Wars fans and newbies alike. Likewise, Wheatley’s art is superb, beautifully portraying both the characters and their environments. This is a title not to be missed by Star Wars fans, even those not collecting any other Dark Horse SW titles.
