The Sanctuary

This title has no words on its masthead, just a drawing of bison, so the name can only be determined from its indicia. In fact, it has no words in the story at all: not recognizable words at any rate. This is the story of group of prehistoric cave dwellers told from the perspective of the cave man who illustrates the cave walls. It is a challenge to decipher the grunts and facial expressions of the characters but it appears that the caveman artist is a bit of an outcast until one of the more high ranking tribesman wants the artist to embellish and promote his accomplishments. One has to wonder how much that scenario is rooted in the artist’s real life experience. The writer/artist, Nate Neal, won a grant from the Xeric Foundation (a private, non-profit corporation established by Peter Laird, the co-creator of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to aid his self-published comic book.
