What If? Spider-Man The Other

™ and ©2006 Marvel Characters, Inc.

The What If...? series from the 1970s and 1980s has been resurrected as a series of one-shot specials during What If? month. These one-shots focus on a common theme each year. In 2007 year the theme was imaging an alternate path for some of the biggest events in Marvel’s recent history. The big Spider-Man event in 2006 was “The Other” which ran consecutively across all the Spider-Man titles. In this arc, Spider-Man was mutilated and beaten to death by an enemy named Morlun. Morlun was first introduced in 2001 by writer J. Michael Straczynski during a storyline that modified Spider-Man’s quasi-scientific origin to include a quasi-mystical element, which set the stage for “The Other.” After Spider-Man’s “death” Parker became enveloped in a cocoon and in a supernatural afterlife dreamscape he embraced his spider persona allowing him to be reborn. In this What If? title, Parker does not accept his spider persona as he did in The Other and is not reborn. He remains mired in the cocoon until of one of his most powerful foes chooses to appropriate Parker’s body. All these What If? scenarios seldom turn out happier than the established continuity, and this title is no exception.
