Eric Masterson was a good friend of the thunder god, Thor, and had even filled in for him on occasion. When Thor finally had to return home to Valhalla, he gave Eric a gift to express his appreciation. The gift, a strange walking stick, becomes a mace called Thunderstrike when it is struck against the ground. Just as Thor’s hammer, Mjolner, gives its owner the powers of the thunder god, Thunderstrike turns Eric Masterson into living powerhouse. For lack of a better name, Eric calls his super-powered self Thunderstrike—after his mace.

In terms of raw power, Thunderstrike is not Thor’s equal. That means he has to fight smarter in order to prevail. Eric is also more a part of the mortal world than Thor ever was, leading to action which is less cosmic in scope and more concerned with combating earthly problems.
