Ian Carney and Woodrow Phoenix are a hand–grenade of laughter that gouges a smile on your face with subversive shrapnel. The first half of the book contains its best material, short–to–medium-length humor stories such as “The Lovely Land of Love!” and the (wisely) one–page “All Architectural Action.” Wonderfully bizarre, the Slave Labor Graphics book plants a few razor blades in even the most innocuous cupcake premise. A few more volumes of this in the right hands, and the Carney/Phoenix duo will quite rightly make some noise among even the most dedicated super–hero–only readers. Sugar Buzz is arguably one of 2005’s best new humor books.
