New Avengers: Illuminati (2nd Series)

Years ago, after the Kree-Skrull War was fought (1972 in real time but probably not that long ago in Marvel-time), Iron Man decided that a confidential group of powerful heroes should insure that such cataclysmic events would be prevented in the future. He enlisted Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt of the Inhumans, the Sub-Mariner and Professor Xavier in his here-t0-fore secret cabal he named the Illuminati. In the first issue of this 5-issue mini-series, the clandestine group pays a surprise visit to the remnants of the Skrull armada to warn the Skulls against any thoughts of retribution. This bold tactic is seen as more of a challenge than a deterrent to the Skrulls so the Illuminati’s effectiveness is certainly questionable.

In subsequent issues the Illuminati involve themselves in Infinity Gauntlet event and the Secret Wars.

The idea that a group of well-known heroes have been secretly working behind the scenes for years invites a host of continuity problems. Writer, Brian Michael Bendis will need to avoid the pitfalls inherent in this scenario to placate fans who consider continuity something to respect.
