Tarzan: The Savage Heart

    (Dark Horse, 1999)
™ and ©1999 Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ legendary Tarzan character was little more than the King of the Apes until he met Jane, the Englishwoman who captured his heart and introduced him to the civilized world. Upon Jane’s death, though, a distraught Tarzan turns his back on civilization, hoping to lose himself in the savage land known as Pellucidar. Symbolically, he ignores the plight of a woman threatened by flying beasts, for in Pellucidar the law of the jungle rules, and Tarzan wants to be savage again. But would he achieve it, or had civilization left its mark on him too greatly? When given the opportunity to serve as a Ruler of Beasts again, the role seems unattractive. Moreover, he finds his decision to turn his back on an innocent is at odds with the hero inside him.

Writer Allen Gross and artist Mike Grell present a conflicted Tarzan, endeavoring to learn just how savage his heart truly is. A full-color Dark Horse mini-series.
