Robin Hood (Charlton)

The venerable legend of Robin Hood is a cultural icon. This series continues the adventures of the noble outlaw of Sherwood Forest. For instance, Robin prevents Maid Marian’s betrothal to a Norman king, fights marauders from France, and even hunts wild boar with King Richard, presumably after he has returned from the Crusades.

Robin Hood and His Merry Men is definitely a product of its times. It was published in the late 1950s when comics were criticized for violent content and the Comics Code Authority was implemented. What fights do occur in this title are abbreviated (often Robin subdues his opponent in one panel with his back to the reader), and instead of sharp arrowheads, Robin’s arrows seem to have some sort of large rounded end so that he can only bruise, not kill, his opponents.
