Subversive Beauty

    (Heavy Metal, 2005)
™ and © Luis Royo

“When we talk of beauty in our society, it always appears slightly fickle and superficial, when it’s completely provocative—man’s weapon of splendour, whether it be sought in reality or abstraction,” says Luis Royo, the Spanish-born artist whose prior illustrated books include Women, Maelfic, Prohibited Book I, and The Labyrinth: Tarot. He paints women as physical incarnations of warrior goddesses, ethereal yet powerful, sexual, maternal, bloody. Their bodies are delicately painted and pinned with metal, with the insinuation that realms of pain and pleasure are intricately entwined. Subversive Beauty collects Royo’s exploration of the female form with swords, silk and unbridled sexuality.
