Helmet of Fate: Detective Chimp

    (DC, 2007)

For unknown reasons, Nabu, Lord of Order, gave Dr. Fate’s helmet, and the task of choosing his successor, to Shadowpact’s Detective Chimp, a talking ape with a Sherlock Holmes fixation. Justifiably freaked, D.C. left the decision to fate (pun intended), and had the helmet hurled into space. But fate, and writer Bill Willingham, both have a sense of humor…

After a year of cosmic sightseeing, the helmet returns, landing squarely on D.C.’s noggin—so, what will a chimp, even a really smart one, do with ultimate power? Well, first he figures out KFC’s™ secret recipe, then solves every crime. But is the world really ready for a blue-and-yellow-spandexed super-chimp?

Probably not, since this one-shot is just the first of five leading into a new Doctor Fate series. Other B-listers playing with the helmet include Sargon the Sorcerer, Ibis the Invincible, Black Alice, and Zauriel.
