Through its culturally diverse populace and state of social upheaval, creator Jason Lutes makes 1920s Berlin a living, breathing entity of its own. The people that are the city’s lifeblood travel through the historic brick roadways that are its arteries, but the post-Great War unrest is a pre-cancerous growth that threatens the life of this enduring German city.

Lutes couldn’t have picked a more fascinating time or place to tell a story this engaging. Germany was a country divided after losses suffered in the First World War, and nowhere was this more evident than in its capital. The Nazi party, the communists, and German nationalists all vie for control, and this unrest permeates every level of daily life; citizens of uncertain allegiance tentatively walk past public rallies, while families are divided over differing opinions.

Lutes further fleshes these conflicts out through a number of characters; two in particular are unusual because their lives are adversely affected by their lack of opinion. One is a writer who finds his thoughts difficult to chronicle because of his neutrality; another is an artist who objectively draws what she sees but feels no passion for it, because she lacks true understanding of current events.

Lutes certainly has a passion, though, for both the city and the era. Both are meticulously researched; Lutes’ characterizations capture the story, and his clean, simple, European drawing style captures the look. This title is definitely deserving of its Eisner nomination.
