The Book of Jack

    (Humanoids, 2000, 2007)

The English translation of Le Livre de Jack still has a flavor all it’s own, even if the story seems familiar to readers of literature. Young Jack is dared to enter the “haunted house” and come out alive, bringing a trinket from inside as a sign of his bravery. He does. Yet the thing he brings out, a musty old book, has a strangeness in text of detailing everything Jack does. When one of the gang steals the book and has someone write something in it, Jack begins to change, physically. His friend, Sam, knows that only she can help Jack return to normal and together, they seek out the one being who can help them.

D.P. Filippi’s story and O.G. Boiscommun’s art combine to bring out a story old in feel and brilliant in execution. The mysterious house story has always been a literary favorite, but this particular tale leaves readers wondering, among other things, just where did this manor with it’s vast library come from.
