Son of Yuppies From Hell

Barbara Slate’s Yuppies from Hell is a hilarious send-up of the “young urban professional” (yuppie) lifestyle. It’s the anti-”Thirtysomething.” In this exquisite collection of stories and one-page gags, Slate focuses on her yuppies’ relationships—from Sal’s fear of commitment to Jane’s terror at the thought of being “out there” and dating again. Bob and Carol are “preggers,” and they’re already concerned with properly educating their unborn child and finding a good “pre-birth school.” Slate’s observations are keen and sometimes biting: she turns the spotlight on the insular lives of a group of people that are “getting married…moving into our neighborhoods, and…spawning more and more of their kind.” This book is a warning. Read it, and heed it. Or the yuppies just may come for you!
