Thirteen

Thirteen (Going on Eighteen) had a very young, female, target audience. The main character is Val, a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family, including an older sister whom Val strives to copy. Val’s best friend is a heavy-set girl named Judy. Judy acts as the down-to-earth friend and always has the right advice to help solve Val’s many teenage troubles.

Each issue contained several short stories about the many wacky situations in which the girls find themselves. If Val isn’t trying to wear makeup too soon, or trying to date the grocery delivery boy, she is thinking up ways to make her friend, Stu, stop following her. In some issues of “Thirteen Going On Eighteen,” Judy has a story of her own.

The series debuted in 1961 and came out sporadically for 29 issues until it was canceled in 1971.
