It’s several years into the future, and various nuclear accidents involving the world’s superpowers have left a fearful and ravaged populace behind. Career soldier Randall Gold feels that pain acutely—all he knows is killing, yet it gives him little satisfaction. Haunted by his meaningless existence, he finds purpose when he encounters an old man who tells him he is destined for greater things. The man trains him in various forms of fighting and discipline, and then brings him into contact with a mighty dragon who lays out his true role in the world. Gold’s path ultimately leads him back to the military, and involves him in a top-secret project of dubious goals. For him, though, it just might be the chance he needs to rid the world of the great evil the dragon foretold…
