After a looooong wait, Dynamite has finally released this first collection of the comic book by Argentine writer Carlos Trillo and Eisner Award-winning artist Eduardo Risso. Borderline follows the adventures of an assassin named Crash in a morose dystopian future of mutants, warfare, and an abundance of death. Sounds like many a dystopian tale, and it is like those, though it has more going for it.

Crash’s past and present are interesting and fun to explore, as the comic does in a series of flashbacks. This is especially true of her past relationship with an enemy, “Ten Year” (also an assassin). Her motivations and understanding of her world (read the book) make for entertaining reading, though how those around her react to her is actually more fun to see.

Risso’s art is also a delight and completely recognizable to mainstream comics fans via his work on 100 Bullets. This story would have a completely different feel with another artist; it’s gritty and tongue-in-cheek all at once.

One problem is that some panels seem lost in translation, which often makes the flow choppy. Oddly enough, the character development seems to lack most in the protagonist. Her supporting cast is very fleshed out, and a significant amount of page space is spent on her. Nevertheless, the book leaves the feeling that much more is wanted, and it’s to be hoped that Volume 2 (not sure when that’s coming out) will provide it.
