The Long Haul
(Oni, 2005)
British writer Antony Johnston (Spooked, Julius) and Uruguayan artist Eduardo Barreto (Green Lantern, Teen Titans) join again to tell a story from the history of a third country.
Chicago, 1871: after a spell as a guest of the Utah Territorial Prison, robber and raconteur Cody Plummer is ready for a comeback. His target is an armored train bound for San Francisco with the government’s last payment on the transcontinental railroad; what adds more flavor to the stew is the fact that the man guarding the train is the same Pinkerton agent who put him away nine years earlier. Moved by greed and revenge (but still unwilling to kill), Plummer uses these drives to gather allies old and new—a fallen lady, a Spanish lockpicker, a banker with a score to settle with Union Pacific and others—to swipe the money without anyone knowing. Barreto’s clean lines harken back to the Silver Age, but the action is definitely in tune with modern–day sensibilities.
