Looking to fuse soul with super-heroes, writer Richard Hamilton and artist Ulises Roman introduce readers to the Super Pimps, a group whose membership would look right at home next to Shaft, Foxy Brown, Coffy, and other blaxploitation heroes. Consisting of Blackbeard, Ghetto Blaster, Homeboy, Foxy Mama, and Sidekick, the team disappears from the public eye for thirty years after suffering a tragedy in battle. Skip ahead to the present day and Detective Jackson Maple works to reunite his childhood heroes so that they can deal out, “Justice with a Strut!”

After reading the title, a natural reaction could easily be “woof.” But I’m here to tell you, brothers and sisters, this book is a sweet piece of reading, if you take the time to get it.

This first installment—titled “Enter the Super Pimps!”—introduces the reader to—what else?—The Hood, 30 years ago. Then and in the present, the Super Pimps were and are becoming again a force to be reckoned with. (How could they not, with a Pimpmobile with license place “BTCHSLAP”?)

The satire is thick, the humor is at times laugh-out-loud, at times less so, but the pace and writing keep this comic flowing. The art, very dark, moody, and with a focus on noir style, balances the satire with the super-heroic drama. To those who enjoy the ’70s films this comic emulates: This book will make you smile. To those who dislike such things: Best avoid this, though it is a groovy ride on the (satirically) wild side.
