A retelling of the origin of Captain Marvel by Jeff Smith, creator of Bone.

DC tries to begin the saga of Captain Marvel once more, perhaps with a better understanding of how he came to be and how his relationship with Billy Batson exists. Young Billy, a homeless orphan, makes his way through the subway system to visit an aged wizard. Now, in times of trouble, he shouts out his magic word and—Shazam!—up pops Captain Marvel. But trouble is brewing and when he’s not trying to help Billy have a better life, the good Captain discovers there’s some nasty goings on happening and he just might be the only being on Earth that can stop the plans of Mister Mind!
