As one might guess from the title, Ex Machina: Inside the Machine takes a look at the creative process inside each issue of Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris’ Wildstorm book Ex Machina. Although Vaughn and Harris both get their say (in an introduction and afterward, respectively), veteran artist Harris (Starman) is the star of this special, which gives us a look both at his method of page creation (from rough pencils to “graywashed” inks to finished product) and his cover production, with a special focus on his photoreferencing technique—we even get to see some of his “actors,” including friend Jimmy Hill, the model for Ex Machina main character Mitchell Hundred. This book is sure to prove interesting to any fans of Ex Machina or anyone interested in the creative artistic process behind comic books in general.
