Helmet of Fate: Black Alice
(DC, 2007)
Lori Zechlin is a high-school Goth girl with the ability to be a magical leech; she can absorb the powers of anyone she comes into contact with. She’s more concerned, though, about getting dates and making friends than being some kind of hero. In this story, Lori learns what it would be like to have the abilities of one of the most powerful magical heroes in the DC Universe: Dr. Fate.
Helmet of Fate: Black Alice is the fourth installment in the five-part Helmet of Fate series, which finds various lesser magic-users of DC continuity beset with the helmet of Dr. Fate, desperately searching for a new host after the events of 52. Writer Gail Simone, who created Black Alice in Birds of Prey, treats this story with equal amounts of whimsy and horror, giving readers an entertaining look at what an overly-emotional high school girl would do if she had nearly omnipotent powers.
