Numb

Small wonder why this won a Xeric Grant. Joshua Kemble’s beautifully drawn, sincerely scripted. The ending feels a little abrupt, and thus a little pat rather than the revelation that breaks the main character’s numbness, but it’s ok, because this isn’t a narrative so much as an illustration of that terrible fugue that comes with heartbreak, and that Kemble captures perfectly. The art is duotone, using a pale blue to radical effect. If Kemble keeps making comics, you’ll see his art on a gallery wall next to Daniel Clowes and Charles Burns in no time.
