Civil War: The Initiative

This comic basically reads like an advertisement for Marvel’s “Initiative” tie-in issues. The first storyline provides some background on the new Omega Flight mini-series and ends with a two-page spread. The second story is about the new Thunderbolts team and was written by that title’s new author, Warren Ellis. Uncharacteristically, this new line-up is working well together and quickly defeats the hero Hurricane. Oddly, Songbird is missing from the story, which ends with a pin-up. These pin-ups are not in continuity with the previous pages and should have just been placed separately from the stories.

The last story feels the least like an ad as Ms. Marvel tells Iron Man about a conflict she had with Spider-Woman, which unlike a stereotypical super-hero comic, did not involve physical fighting. Lots of large panels were used to take up space, and the remaining pages are filled with an “Initiative” checklist and 16 pages of previews featuring some of these tie-ins. All in all, this book is light and of little consequence to the ongoing books they refer to.
