Helmet of Fate: Zauriel

™ and © 2007 DC Comics, Inc.

Helmet of Fate: Zauriel is the final installment in the Helmet of Fate series, which bridges the gap between DC Comics’ 52 and the upcoming Doctor Fate series. Zauriel, created by writers Grant Morrison and Mark Millar, is a guardian angel who gave up his immortality to come to Earth because he fell in love with a mortal woman; he’s most famous for his time on the Justice League during Grant Morrison’s run on JLA. This issue finds him sent to the planet Alstair, where he must stop a rebel named Okeontis, who has acquired the lost Helmet of Fate and uses it for her own evil ends.

The opening of this issue, in which Zauriel faces a Sunday school class full of questions about religion, is enough to make it an enjoyable read. It’s also scripted by Steve Gerber, scheduled writer for Doctor Fate, so the comic doubles as a preview for the upcoming series.
