Chilling Tales of Horror (1st Series)

Chilling Tales of Horror is a low-grade version of Warren’s Creepy—1950s-style horror comics repackaged in a black and white magazine format to avoid the restrictions of the comic code. However, where Warren’s magazines drew inspiration from the outstanding art and storytelling of EC, Chilling Tales of Horror reprises the oeuvre of second-string publishers and third-rate talents. It is hard to tell if the unsigned stories are originals or reprints, though evidence points to the latter. The stories plow the familiar ground of ghouls and vampires, psychopaths and sea-monsters, drawn in a heavy, craftless style that looks very out-of-date by the elevated standards of the late 1960s.
