The songs are well known. Jazz, rock, and R & B legends have all sung songs based on Lee Shelton, aka Stagger Lee, since the early 1900s. Performers have included The Clash, Mississippi John Hurt, Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead.

Lee Shelton kills Billy Lyon over a Stetson hat. Shelton either hangs or goes to jail. Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix have created a contemporary cultural classic that has the impact of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Not only is this a graphic novel, but also an examination of “They said,” “they saw,” and “they meant” from both black and white viewpoints. This is no comic-book fluff.

Filled with complex characters motivated by various concerns, this story of Stagger Lee sits at the cusp of American history. Racial attitudes and the beginnings of the rise of black power are represented well.

Shepherd Hendrix’ style captures the narrative rich storyline. The choice of sepia tones over color is fitting. Prepare for an unusual history lesson.
