Guardians (HB)
(HB, 2006)
™ and © HB
Guardians is a solid concept, set in a super-hero universe, and writer Chris Callahan wastes no time in having the main villain trash The White House, kill a bunch of people, and initiate his plan. His villain’s decisiveness and lots of people getting killed will draw some readers into the story, and the political angle tied the story into fighting modern-day terrorism. Some of the issue does rely on stereotypes: the villain with the costume and the cape (why?) and the team of super-heroes run by the government (why?). Callahan gives a tantalizing glimpse into a universe that might have answers to those questions. Additionally, the villain fights efficiently and ruthlessly. There’s no delaying tactic used to stretch out the story.
If Michael Watkins could get help on the art and/or beef up his own skills, people could really get into this story — if Callahan can maintain the ruthless pace.
This is one to watch.
