Can a “how to” book be artistic? If you’re Lynda Barry, then the answer is yes. Her contribution to 2007’s Free Comic Book Day, which is an excerpt from her 2008 Drawn and Quarterly book, What It Is, is an instructional manual for all-ages on how to, as Barry puts it, “write the unthinkable”. It is a true activity book, for Barry offers several exercises designed to inspire creativity. It is presented in a format where line drawings are combined with mixed-media collages in an artistic fashion.
