Alien Pig Farm 3000
(Image, 2007)
™ and © 2007 Image Comics Inc.
Todd Farmer scripts a tale concocted by himself, Steve Niles and Thomas Jane about a couple of good ol’ boys who, never meaning no harm, awaken cryogenically frozen alien villains while conducting their moonshine operation. It’s fun, light-hearted and self-aware, the kind of story that disarms questions like the point of a bootleg hooch outfit post-prohibition, or where they got enough T&T to level Mount Rushmore. Between the B-movie subject matter, and the Don Marquez art, there’s a retro feel to this comic, reminiscent of the late 80s indie market, when publishers like Continuity or First were experimenting with better color printing than DC and Marvel used.
— Brendan McGinley
From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:
Sporting a nice cover by William Stout (Heavy Metal, The New Dinosaurs) and solid interior work by fantasy artist Don Marquez, Alien Pig Farm 3000 #1 is an over-the-top tale of moonshine, southern rednecks (portrayed stereotypically, of course), incest, aliens, and dinosaurs. Never for a second does the story ring true, but it is kind of fun.
The action centers around the adventures of brothers Elvis and Johnny Ray, who are something of a cross between Hazzard County’s Bo and Luke Duke, Perfection’s Val and Earl (Tremors), and Wacky Races’ Dick Dastardly and Muttley. While running from the cops, springing a highly improbable trap long the way, Elvis and Johnny blow up their moonshine still. The explosion has unintended (if not surprising) consequences, giving the issue its cliffhanger ending.
Obviously, Alien Pig Farm isn’t meant to be taken seriously, and it’s easy to imagine the three guys given credit for the story (Todd Farmer, Steve Niles, and Thomas Jane) sitting around late at night, blurting out ideas explored years ago by various E.C. and Warren creators.
