This book opens with a group of teenagers sitting around a campfire scoffing at a scary story about Charles Lee Ray, the Lakeside Strangler. Two of the group wander off for a romantic interlude but soon their screams alert the others that their naïveté was... imprudent. So in the best tradition of slasher movies, the remainder of the group split up to investigate. The result is exactly what the reader expects. The Lakeside Strangler, trapped in the body of a child’s doll, has returned. Meanwhile Chicago Police Detective Barry Preston anticipates his upcoming retirement even as his colleagues tease him about his history with the possessed doll. Chucky’s desire for revenge against the man who foiled his return to flesh and blood will prevent Preston from enjoying his golden years. In 1988 the movie Child’s Play introduced the world to Chucky, the amalgam of a serial killer with the seeming innocence of a doll. The popularity of the original spawned several sequels which serve as the background for this series. — George Haberberger
