Grimm Fairy Tales: Return to Wonderland

When she was a little girl, Alice Liddle had a fantastic adventure through a looking glass. It appeared that Alice lived happily ever after with a husband and family, but when her daughter Calie interrupts a suicide attempt, it is obvious that something in her life has gone terribly wrong. Now Calie seems destined to follow her in mother’s footsteps down the rabbit hole. Adapting childhood stories with to real-world circumstances has become a popular trend and Lewis Carroll’s renowned fantasy seems to be an irresistible source to appropriate. Frank Beddor’s novel, The Looking Glass Wars, also mined this literary landmark with an “everything you know is wrong” conceit. This series from Zenescope Entertainment does much the same, but like their Grimm Fairy Tales, adds titillating images of well-endowed women dressed as very young girls. There may be no real problem with these near-fetishistic illustrations but it is apparent that the story alone cannot be counted on to hold the reader’s attention. — George Haberberger
