A bunch of strangers wake up in a leech-infested prison, where a chainsaw-wielding maniac proceeds to slaughter them. Then a flamethrower-wielding maniac proceeds to slaughter him. A few escape into a city where the apocalypse looks like ancient history, only to be attacked by zombie forest creatures, and saved by a third maniac, this one of the hoe-wielding variety. This is presumably tied in to the Nazi saboteur in the book’s prologue. So there’s some intriguing setup, but not a lot of characterization considering the hook is that readers’ votes will decide who the lone survivor is. Thank goodness for the character “cheat sheet” in the back.
